New York: Nosy Business– Twisted Lily Fragrance Boutique & Apothecary
When I was in Europe this past summer, I was obsessed with some of the niche fragrance boutiques we visited, such as Jovoy in Paris and 10 Corso Como in Milan. Some of the extraordinary fragrance brands they carry I only read or heard about through industry articles or specific online shops, but I never had any access to actually see them in person, let alone smelling them. If I didn’t have to worry about my already over-weighted luggage, I’d easily break my bank buying all these hard to find fragrances. I was secretly hoping that besides all the big brand designer fragrances, we can have more of these small niche fragrance resources in the United State. As if somebody heard my silent prayer, an online fragrance boutique, Twisted Lily, finally opened up a store in Brooklyn in October, and I have finally found some time to check it during the holiday season.
Twisted Lily, the new niche fragrance boutique on Atlantic Avenue, may be small, but the selection is mighty indeed. No surprise, considering the perfume pedigrees of co-owners Eric Weiser and Stamatis Birsimijoglou. Prior to opening the elegant fragrance enclave this month, they ran the e-commerce site parfum1.com for twelve years, a destination for cult-favorite and hard-to-find scents. And they are continuing that legacy at Twisted Lily.
In a recent interview, Eric and Stamatis expressed that “You can describe a fragrance to the best of your ability, but you can’t ever have that intimate one-on-one session with somebody to help them find the perfect scent, which is what we’re all about.”
The selection at Twisted Lily, while thoughtfully cultivated, is also vast, and according to Birsimijoglu, will continue to evolve as the pair discovers what customers respond to. There is a corner devoted to Brooklyn-born perfumes by D.S. & Durga, CB I hate Perfume, and Joya. And no good fragrance boutique would be complete without French imports like Serge Lutens, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Maison Dorin (fragrance house to the court of Versailles since 1780), and Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Presenting an all-around approach, the shop also offers home fragrances, bath and body, make up and skincare products from a range of indie brands like Rouge Bunny Rouge and In Fiore.
“Because of our olfactive memory, people are often going to remember you based on your scent,” says Weiser. “And you get to choose that personal scent soundtrack or fragrance aura; you get to choose how you want people to remember you.” If you’re just like me, always passionate and very particular about fragrances and all of the designer brands in the department stores are no news to you anymore, take a visit at Twisted Lily in Brooklyn, the chances are you’ll have a hard time picking out just one favorite from the whole store.
